Not All Algorithms are Created Equal

A sensor that doesn’t react to Black hands but works fine for everyone else (Facebook Office’s ‘Racist soap dispenser,’ 2017). A hiring algorithm that is sexist towards women (Amazon, 2018). These are only a few examples of AIs that became unintentionally racist or sexist because they used datasets with biases.


Last week, 6 of our students participated in the Odyssey Momentum Hackathon. With more than 100 teams worldwide they tried to decode issues societies face today.

Themes during the hackathon ranged from climate change to cyber security and beyond. Codam’s challenge was to find a way societies can deal with cybercrime on the engine of their economy, the SME companies.
